Many of us take having access to the internet for granted. For most of us, internet use is so intertwined in our daily lives; it would be difficult to imagine a day without it. And we aren’t talking about the use of the internet for entertainment or escapism purposes – a scroll on TikTok or Instagram – we are talking about the crucial role internet access plays in improving the quality of people’s lives. Members of our community, who cannot access an affordable and reliable internet connection, risk falling behind and becoming excluded from our society.
Digital Exclusion: A Barrier to Opportunity
In a world where we are not all born with the same opportunities, the internet can be a life-changing tool. For young people in our North-East communities, internet access can dramatically boost their education. Their learning doesn’t have to stop once they leave the classroom; students can follow their curiosity freely. A better education will typically lead to better employment opportunities, income and quality of life. Not only that but for those who are considering a career change, the internet provides resources for research, access to online learning or job seekers platforms and the ability to connect with others who are already working in industry. The internet can be the essential “leg up” that people need to fulfil their potential and live a happy, fulfilling life. We think this is particularly important for women who are re-entering the workforce, who are a key part of our community focus.
Healthcare and Essential Services: The Hidden Cost of Digital Exclusion
Digital exclusion can also prevent members of our community from receiving advice or treatment from healthcare, social and government services. Without internet connectivity, many people struggle to book appointments online, find essential contact details, apply for government benefits, communicate with social services, and complete essential forms and applications. This particularly affects those who cannot visit services in person because they have a disability, are carers or work commitments without the option of booking time off. You can imagine the impact that this has on those who are already struggling: without digital access, their problems worsen and their suffering continues without hope in sight. This leads to feelings of frustration, isolation and hopelessness.
Announcing: Our Free Data SIM Card Initiative
TechJumpstartHub is committed to solving the problem of internet access for our North-East community. We want everyone to be able to experience the benefits of internet access, no matter who they are.
We are delighted to announce that we are in the position to award a number of data SIM cards, which will provide free-of-charge internet access, to support members of our community who are most in need.
These data SIM cards will enable recipients to access online education resources, search and apply for jobs, connect with essential healthcare services, stay in touch with support networks, and develop crucial digital skills.
This initiative aligns perfectly with our core mission: empowering women and young people from underrepresented communities with the confidence, skills, and support to thrive in technology through our four-part approach: skills training, mentorship, community support, and career pathways. We believe this is the start to building a fairer, more inclusive society where no one is left behind.
How to Apply
Details on how to apply for our free data SIM card programme will be released on our Social Media pages. Follow us on Instagram and LinkedIn to get the latest information on applying and find out more about how TechJumpstartHub supports our community. No prior knowledge of technology is required – as with our other programmes, we welcome beginners and will provide all the support needed to get started.
